Controlling devices with hand gestures
The camera follows the user's hand and turns each gesture into a command: an open palm turns on, a fist turns off, and moving the hand up or down increases or decreases. No remote or touch is needed, which suits kitchens, labs, and people who can't use regular switches.
The problem
Touch control is impractical where hands are wet, dirty, or busy — kitchens, labs, and repair workshops — and voice control fails in noisy places. Gestures solve both, but most ready solutions need expensive AI boards.
How it works
- CaptureThe camera films the hand, and the computer extracts the joint points.
- ClassificationThe hand shape is compared with six predefined patterns.
- HoldA gesture must be held for a fraction of a second before it becomes a command.
- ExecutionThe command is sent to the controller, which switches the relay or the servo.
Project features
- Recognition runs on the computer and the controller only executes, so no expensive AI board is needed.
- Six different gestures cover on, off, increase, and decrease commands.
- A safety lock prevents a command unless the gesture is held for a fraction of a second.
- It works in normal lighting with no depth camera needed.
Parts
All the parts you need in one place. Remove what you already have, and swap parts to fit your budget. Parts with a photo are available in our store at their current price.
Prices are estimates and may change. Parts marked “other supplier” are ordered outside our main store.
Expected challenges
These are the main obstacles to expect during the build, laid out clearly so you know them before you start.
- Strong backlighting loses track of the hand, so calibration or front lighting is needed.
- Similar gestures get confused; the fix is fewer gestures, not more training.
- Network delay between the computer and the controller makes the response feel slow.
- A clear neutral state must be defined, or every passing movement becomes a command.
The consultation gives you a solution for each one.
