Smart knee brace with cooling and range-of-motion control

A brace that measures knee angle, load, and joint temperature; it blocks movement beyond the safe angle and cools the joint when it heats up. It also logs every rehab session so the therapist can follow progress in numbers.

The problem

After knee surgery, the patient must exercise within a set range of angles: less movement stiffens the joint, more can cause harm. Nobody at home watches them, so they either overdo the exercise or stop out of fear. The therapist only sees them once a week and relies on the patient's description of what they did.

How it works

  1. MeasurementThe joint's angle, temperature, and load are read continuously.
  2. VerificationEach reading is confirmed by a second sensor before any decision is based on it.
  3. ResponseWhen the allowed angle is exceeded, movement is restricted; when the temperature rises, cooling runs.
  4. RegistrationSession data is saved: range of motion, repetitions, and temperature.

Project features

  • A real angle limit, not just an alert: the brace prevents going past it.
  • Two sensors for every important measurement, so if one fails the other catches it.
  • Local cooling when the joint heats up after exercise.
  • A digital session log the therapist can review instead of relying on the patient's description.

Expected challenges

These are the main obstacles to expect during the build, laid out clearly so you know them before you start.

  • ⚠ This is an educational project: any device that restricts a patient's joint movement requires a full medical approval process.
  • The thermoelectric module draws a high current and heats up on its other side, so cooling needs a heat sink.
  • Duplicate sensors double the complexity, but without them a single error becomes a hazard.
  • The brace must stay fixed on the leg without slipping, or every measurement becomes wrong.

The consultation gives you a solution for each one.
