Driver drowsiness detection and alert

A camera watches the driver's eyes and head position, and when signs of drowsiness appear it alerts with sound and vibration and logs the event for fleet management.

The problem

Drowsy driving has effects similar to drunk driving: slower reactions and impaired judgment. The worst part is that the driver doesn't feel it, believing they're alert until they miss an exit or drift out of the lane. Long night trips on straight, monotonous desert roads are the worst case. So the alert has to come from outside, because the driver's own attention is already impaired.

How it works

  1. MonitoringThe camera watches the driver's face continuously while driving.
  2. MeasurementThe system measures how open the eyes are and how long they stay closed.
  3. PostureRepeated tilting of the head forward or sideways is a second indicator.
  4. ConfirmationBoth indicators together for long enough mean drowsiness, not a normal blink.
  5. AlertsA loud sound and vibration in the seat or steering wheel alert the driver immediately.
  6. RegistrationThe event is logged with its time in a report for fleet management.

Project features

  • It addresses a well-known, documented cause of crashes and carries real ethical weight.
  • Each indicator confirms the other, reducing false alarms.
  • The vibration alert reaches the driver even with loud noise inside the vehicle.
  • The event log helps transport companies evaluate drivers.
  • It combines computer vision with real-time systems.

Expected challenges

These are the main obstacles to expect during the build, laid out clearly so you know them before you start.

  • Changing light while driving — day, night, and tunnels — is the hardest challenge.
  • Sunglasses hide the eyes completely.
  • Vehicle vibration moves the camera and loses track of the face.
  • Processing must be real time, since any delay cancels the value of the alert.
  • Filming the driver for the whole trip requires clear privacy safeguards.

The consultation gives you a solution for each one.

Expected committee questions

Prepare your answers in advance: these questions come up often in defenses of similar projects.

  1. Which indicators are used to detect drowsiness, and what is PERCLOS?
  2. How does the system work at night or when the driver wears sunglasses?
  3. How are false alarms that annoy the driver reduced?
  4. How fast is the processing, and is it fast enough to alert the driver in time?
