Smart water meter for leak detection
The meter measures water flow and compares it with the home's normal usage pattern, detecting hidden leaks before they show up on the bill or damage the walls.
The problem
Jordan is one of the most water-poor countries in the world, and hidden pipe leaks waste thousands of liters before anyone notices. The bill only reveals the problem a month later, after the water is gone.
How it works
- MeasurementA flow sensor on the main pipe counts pulses and converts them into liters.
- LearningDuring the first week, the system records the home's normal consumption pattern by hour and day.
- ComparisonEvery flow is compared with the recorded pattern; a small flow that continues for hours is a sign of a leak.
- ClosingWhen a leak is confirmed, the electric valve shuts off the water and an alert is sent.
- DisplayAn OLED screen shows live and daily consumption.
- ReportA dashboard on the phone shows the day's and month's consumption and any detected leak.

Expected challenges

- The YF-S201's accuracy drops at very small flows — exactly the flows of a leak.
- Telling a leak from long normal use, such as filling the tank or watering.
- Installing the sensor and valve on the pipes requires careful plumbing without leaks.
- Intermittent water supply in Jordan lets air into the pipes and causes wrong readings.
- A quick manual way to reopen the water is needed in case the valve closes by mistake.
