Mobile virtual-doctor robot

A robot with a screen and video link that a doctor drives remotely between rooms, stopping at the patient's bed to talk, providing a mobile presence instead of a fixed call.

The problem

A traditional video call ties the doctor to a fixed screen on a desk: they can't move around the patient, go to another bed, or see the room from a different angle. Consultants also can't be present in every hospital, especially in governorates far from Amman. A mobile robot turns the connection from a fixed point into a moving presence.

How it works

  1. CommunicationThe doctor opens the dashboard and connects to the robot over the internet.
  2. MovingThe doctor steers the robot with direction buttons, moving it between rooms.
  3. VisionThe camera streams a live image, and the doctor controls the viewing angle at will.
  4. ConversationA microphone and speaker let the doctor talk with the patient and the medical staff.
  5. SafetyDistance sensors prevent the robot from bumping into patients or furniture.
  6. BackThe robot returns to its charging point when the round is over.

Project features

  • It provides a mobile presence instead of a fixed call — the core idea of the project.
  • It serves governorates far from consultants' centers.
  • It allows a live demo in front of the committee: drive the robot around the defense room and talk through it from another room.
  • It combines mobile robotics, live streaming, and remote control.
  • It can be extended with onboard vital-sign measurement.

Expected challenges

These are the main obstacles to expect during the build, laid out clearly so you know them before you start.

  • Remote control lags depending on internet speed, and this delay is a hazard while moving.
  • Obstacle avoidance is essential in an environment with patients, cables, and moving beds.
  • Setting the camera's stability and height so the patient in bed is seen at a suitable angle.
  • Balancing battery life against the needs of a full ward round.
  • Live streaming inside patient rooms requires strict privacy safeguards.

The consultation gives you a solution for each one.

Expected committee questions

Prepare your answers in advance: these questions come up often in defenses of similar projects.

  1. How does the doctor control the robot remotely, and how much delay is there in image and movement?
  2. How does the robot avoid obstacles and people in the corridors?
  3. What happens if the connection drops while the robot is moving?
  4. How is the patient's privacy protected during the video call?
