Sound-activated security camera
A camera that sleeps to save power and wakes only on an unusual sound such as breaking glass, a door, or footsteps; it takes a photo and sends it with the audio, so there are no hours of footage nobody reviews.
The problem
A traditional security camera records around the clock, piling up terabytes of footage that nobody reviews, so a theft is discovered two days later. Motion detection is also fooled by curtains, cats, and changing light.
How it works
- ListeningThe sound module monitors the noise level continuously with low power use.
- ThresholdSound above the set threshold wakes the system.
- ConfirmationThe motion sensor confirms there's a real event before taking a photo.
- SendingThe camera takes a photo and uploads it with the event time.

Expected challenges
These are the main obstacles to expect during the build, laid out clearly so you know them before you start.
- Tuning the threshold is the heart of the project: too low alerts every minute, too high detects nothing.
- Background noise changes between day and night, so the threshold must adapt.
- The ESP32-CAM heats up and restarts itself if the power supply is weak.
- Uploading photos uses power; relying on sound reduces wake-ups but doesn't eliminate them.
