Smart medicine fridge for pharmacies

It monitors the medicine fridge temperature around the clock, alerts immediately when it leaves the allowed range, and keeps a log proving the medicines were stored correctly.

The problem

Many medicines — insulin, vaccines, and some antibiotics — spoil if their temperature leaves a narrow range, and it happens without visible signs: they look the same but lose their effect. The pharmacist only discovers the problem when a patient complains, by which point a whole batch has been dispensed. And nobody knows when the power goes out at night. Continuous measurement turns this risk from assumed safety into a documented record.

How it works

  1. MeasurementA temperature sensor inside the fridge reads continuously, alongside a humidity sensor.
  2. MonitoringThe system compares the reading with the allowed range for each type of medicine.
  3. Door detectionA magnetic sensor detects the door being left open longer than necessary.
  4. AlertsLeaving the range triggers a local alarm and sends an instant message to the pharmacist.
  5. ContinuityA backup battery keeps monitoring going during power cuts.
  6. LoggingThe full temperature curve is saved as a document proving the storage was safe.

Project features

  • A documented log is a real regulatory requirement, not a cosmetic feature.
  • The alert reaches the pharmacist even while they're asleep, so the batch can be saved.
  • Open-door detection catches the most common cause of leaving the range.
  • The backup battery keeps monitoring going precisely during power cuts.
  • A clear market: every pharmacy, medicine warehouse, and health center.

Expected challenges

These are the main obstacles to expect during the build, laid out clearly so you know them before you start.

  • The sensor's position inside the fridge changes the reading: near the door differs from near the cooler.
  • Condensation on the sensor corrupts the reading and damages it over time.
  • Running a wire into the fridge breaks the insulation; a wireless solution is better.
  • False alarms on normal door openings make the pharmacist ignore the alerts.
  • The log must be tamper-proof to serve as an official document.

The consultation gives you a solution for each one.

Expected committee questions

Prepare your answers in advance: these questions come up often in defenses of similar projects.

  1. What temperature range is allowed for medicines, and what happens if it's exceeded for a few minutes?
  2. How do you make sure the log isn't modified, so it's reliable evidence?
  3. How does monitoring continue when the fridge loses power?
  4. What's the purpose of adding the door sensor?
