Automated entry-check gate

The gate checks everyone who enters: it measures temperature from a distance and verifies protective measures, and only opens the barrier for people who meet the conditions. It can be applied to any infectious disease.

The problem

Manual screening at entrances proved inadequate in every epidemic wave: staff aren't trained on the device, readings may be misread, people are waved through when it's busy, and screening stops entirely when the supervisor is away. The problem isn't the technology but the reliance on constant human discipline — and automation removes that reliance.

How it works

  1. ApproachA distance sensor detects the person arriving at the gate and starts the check.
  2. MeasurementA non-contact temperature sensor measures forehead temperature from a safe distance.
  3. VerificationThe camera checks compliance with the required protective measures.
  4. DecisionA normal reading combined with compliance opens the barrier automatically.
  5. DenialA high reading blocks entry and alerts the person in charge.
  6. LoggingEvery entry attempt is logged with its time, reading, and result.

Project features

  • It applies to any infectious disease, not one specific epidemic, so the idea outlives any wave.
  • It removes the reliance on staff discipline — the heart of the real problem.
  • The time log supports contact tracing when a case appears.
  • A clear, convincing live demo in front of the committee.
  • It has real users: schools, factories, hospitals, and universities.

Parts

Expected challenges

These are the main obstacles to expect during the build, laid out clearly so you know them before you start.

  • Remote temperature accuracy is affected by distance, angle, and air temperature.
  • Forehead temperature differs from actual body temperature, so calibration and correction are needed.
  • Check speed: a slow gate causes queues, and the procedure gets dropped in practice.
  • Privacy: people's health measurements must be protected and not shared.
  • Fault cases: the barrier must open safely in emergencies or power cuts.

The consultation gives you a solution for each one.

Expected committee questions

Prepare your answers in advance: these questions come up often in defenses of similar projects.

  1. How is temperature measured accurately from a distance, and how do distance and air temperature affect it?
  2. How does the camera verify mask wearing or compliance with protective measures?
  3. How does the system handle someone who refuses the check or tries to get past the barrier?
  4. How many people can the gate check per minute?
