Wireless energy meter with a range of kilometers
A unit mounted on the electrical panel that measures consumption without cutting any wire, and sends readings over LoRa for kilometers to a receiver with a display and a browser dashboard. Suited to farms and warehouses without Wi-Fi.
The problem
Smart energy meters rely on Wi-Fi, which is missing exactly where monitoring is needed: farms, warehouses, remote pumps, and rented apartments. As a result, the meter is still read by eye once a month.
How it works
- MeasurementThe current transformer wraps around the load wire and reads the current drawn.
- AccountThe transmitter calculates power and the energy consumed in kilowatt-hours.
- SendingReadings are sent over LoRa to the receiver at regular intervals.
- DisplayThe receiver shows the readings on its screen and provides a browser dashboard.

Expected challenges
These are the main obstacles to expect during the build, laid out clearly so you know them before you start.
- Calibrating the current transformer is essential, otherwise the reading is an estimate, not a real measurement.
- The voltage is assumed constant unless measured, which introduces an error in the power calculation.
- Working near 220 V is dangerous, so insulation and an enclosure are mandatory.
- LoRa range drops a lot because of concrete walls, not distance alone.
